India put Sussex in after winning the toss on a rain-interrupted morning and soon made inroads into the host’s batting.
Luke Wells, Lou Vincent and Chris Nash all fell cheaply as Sussex slipped to 58-3 against an India side featuring five of the side which won the World Cup final in March. Young trio Joe Gatting, Matt Machan and Ben Brown ensured Sussex reached a respectable total with some impressive batting. Machan put on 47 with Gatting (46) and 65 with Brown (48) before he was caught and bowled by Suresh Raina for 56. Sussex lost their way in the closing overs and a total of 236 all out - which was revised to a winning target of 235 off 45 overs on D/L - was never going to be enough.
There was disappointment for the large Indian contingent in the crowd when Sachin Tendulkar was dismissed for just 21 but joy for Chris Liddle who picked up the prized scalp. Parthiv Patel went for 55 when he was bowled by skipper Chris Nash before a partnership of 104 between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma put the result beyond doubt. Kohli fell for 71 to Naved Arif with the finish line in sight but Sharma was still there at the end on 61 as India wrapped up victory with 25 balls to spare.
The young cricket fans got to meet their hero Sachin Tendulkar when the batsman universally considered one of the all-time greats signed T-shirts, bats and programmes.< Previous Next >
