CHINESE YEAR OF THE DRAGON CELEBRATED IN HOVE

May the celestial Dragon bring great good luck to everyone in Brighton & Hove!

The Chinese Year of the Dragon was roared in at Hove Town Hall on Sunday.  The Dragon, the fifth sign of the Chinese Zodiac, is a creature of myth and legend.  In ancient China the celestial Dragon represents an emperor and power.  The Dragon is the ultimate auspicious symbol signifying success and happiness.
Hundreds of people were inspired by the beauty and power of the Dragon, Lion and Fan dances.  The ancient Dragon Dance is said to drive away bad luck and evil spirits before the Chinese New Year, which starts today, January 23rd.  According to folklore, those who watch these performances will be lucky too!  Traditional fan dancers in costume celebrated “strength, goodness and fertility” at the celebration.
People of all ages and cultural backgrounds were welcomed to join in the celebrations and to learn more about the ancient Chinese culture.  There were many more performances throughout the event including some Chinese opera, Kung Fu demonstrations and a magic show.  Displays on Chinese culture and food stalls as well as a variety of hands on Chinese experiences such as taster Chinese classes and dragon-making classes were enjoyed by all.
Children throughout the city are celebrating Chinese New Year with special Chinese cookery classes, dragon puppet making and Chinese arts, crafts, stories, songs and hand drums.
