CYCLE MARATHON - HOVE TO HONG KONG!

More and more people are cycling these days - but pedalling from the UK to Hong Kong is taking the pastime to the limit!

That is exactly what Micheil Gordon and Jon Lee are doing to raise funds for WaterAid - an international charity dedicated to providing safe water and sanitation for the world's poorest people.  Micheil is a graduate of Brighton University.

Having left the UK on the Newhaven to Dieppe ferry, their ten month, 10,000 mile expedition from Hove to Hong Kong is taking them through France, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and China.  Phew!

It was in pursuit of their Environmental Science degrees that they had the idea to undertake a challenge to raise money for a good cause, whilst increasing awareness of an important environmental issue at the same time.  Micheil and Jon had become aware of the many challenges faced by the developing world through both their travel experiences and their studies.  Combining their passion for cycling, sustainability and the environment, they decided to support the vital work of WaterAid.

Wednesday 22nd June 2011 – Tehran, Iran

Just when they thought they had experienced the height of hospitality in Turkey they entered Iran where the number of welcoming people was even greater.  Their route to Tehran took them first to Khoy then Tabriz. From Tabriz they took a small detour across the mountain range to the Caspian Sea before arriving in Tehran.

Monday 4th July 2011 – Mashhad, Eastern Iran – Half way to Hong Kong!

After eleven days in the burning desert they arrived in the holy city of Mashhad.  Their time in the desert has been the greatest challenge of the trip so far.
