The Brighton & Hove Albion boss Gus Poyet was hoping for a home tie from the FA Cup third round draw. ‘The FA Cup is the best cup in the world if you ask me. However, I would like a home draw against the smallest team possible. Hopefully there will be no more Sunderlands or Liverpools; I know the fans like those games but because of those two games we went on a run of not playing well.’Gus was not disappointed – his friend and former Chelsea teammate Gianfranco Zola handed the Seagulls a home tie against the Conference high-flyers, Wrexham. Albion will kick-off the new year with three home games on the trot – the tie against the Blue Square Premier outfit is likely to take place on Saturday January 7th, in between Championship visits from Southampton and Bristol City.
The FA Cup is the oldest association football competition in the world. The FA Cup was first held in 1871-1872. Football clubs of all standards compete, from the largest clubs in England and Wales down to the smaller amateur village teams. The tournament is known for the possibility for ‘minnows’ from the lower divisions to become ‘giant-killers’ by eliminating top clubs from the tournament and even – in theory – win the Cup, although lower division teams do not often progress beyond the early stages.
The current holders of the FA Cup are Manchester City who beat Stoke City 1-0 in the 2011 final for their fifth FA Cup triumph and first since 1969.
