Gareth Malone took on the enormous challenge of joining the production team at the world renowned opera house in the role of Chorus Master for his first opera, the highly acclaimed Knight Opera. A new youth opera commissioned by Glyndebourne especially for young people aged between 14-19 years old, Knight Crew is an adaptation of the legend of King Arthur set in a modern city.Gareth visited local schools and community groups to select 50 teenage chorus stars who would never usually have the opportunity to perform on stage and then coached them to the exceptional standard expected from Glyndebourne. Knight Crew, one of Gareth’s largest outreach projects, culminated in 3 performances at Glyndebourne Opera House in March 2010. Gareth’s journey with the Knight Crew was filmed by the BBC and broadcast in June 2010 as a three part documentary.
The BBC, Gareth, Glyndebourne and the amazing cast and musicians of Knight Crew should be immensely proud of their truly magnificent achievements.
