Glyndebourne Festival Opera 2010

In the world of opera Glyndebourne is unique - recognised globally as one of the great opera houses.  The Glyndebourne Festival runs until 29th August.

Following the huge success at Glyndebourne of The Fairy Queen last summer, Jonathon Kent returns to direct a new production of Don Giovanni, conducted by Music Director Vladimir Jurowski.  Revivals of Cosi fan tutte, Macbeth, Hansel und Gretel and Rake's Progress complete the season.

For Glyndebourne's first new production of Don Giovanni in a decade, the highly successful artistic partnership of director Jonathan Kent and designer Paul Brown reunites following their acclaimed Glyndebourne Festival Opera 2009 production of Purcell’s The Fairy Queen. Conducting is shared between Glyndebourne Festival Music Director Vladimir Jurowski, with new Glyndebourne on Tour Music Director Jakub Hrŭša taking the baton from 31st July.

Canadian bass-baritone Gerald Finley, who has appeared in numerous Glyndebourne productions since joining the Chorus in 1986, takes the title role. Italian bass Luca Pisaroni, who sang Guglielmo in the 2006 Festival production of Così fan tutte, will sing Leporello.

Cosi fan tutte Mozart
A revival of Nicholas Hytner’s 2006 Festival production. Conducted by Charles Mackerras and from 18th June by American James Gaffigan, who made his Glyndebourne debut in the 2009 Glyndebourne On Tour production of Falstaff.

A fresh cast of young lovers features British soprano Sally Matthews as Fiordiligi, who sang Lauretta in the 2004 Glyndebourne production of Gianni Schicchi. British tenor Allan Clayton, who made his Glyndebourne debut in the title role of Albert Herring for the 2008 Glyndebourne Festival, sings the role of Ferrando. German mezzo-soprano Barbara Senator, who sang Second Nymph in last year’s Festival production of Rusalka, will sing Dorabella. Canadian bass-baritone Robert Gleadow will make his Glyndebourne debut as Guglielmo. Italian baritone Pietro Spagnoli sings Don Alfonso following his role as Dandini in the 2007 Glyndebourne Festival production of La Cenerentola, with French soprano Anna Maria Panzarella as Despina, following her performances as Susanna in the 2005 Glyndebourne On Tour production of Le nozze di Figaro.

Macbeth Verdi
Geoffrey Dolton revives Richard Jones’ 2007 Glyndebourne Festival production with design by ULTZ and Russian conductor Vasily Petrenko in his Glyndebourne debut.

Polish baritone Andrzej Dobber sings the title role following his performances as Kurwenal in the 2009 Glyndebourne Festival revival of Tristan und Isolde. Swedish-American soprano Erika Sunnengårdh makes her Glyndebourne Festival debut as Lady Macbeth, while Russian bass Stanislav Shvets reprises the role of Banquo. South Korean tenor Yonhoon Lee, who sang some performances of Don José in the 2008 Glyndebourne On Tour production of Carmen, will sing Macduff.

Hansel und Gretel Humperdinck
Stéphane Marlot revives Laurent Pelly’s 2008 Glyndebourne Festival production. Robin Ticciati, formerly Music Director for Glyndebourne on Tour, conducts.

British mezzo-soprano Alice Coote, who sang Nero in the 2008 Glyndebourne Festival production of L’incoronazione di Poppea, will sing Hänsel, with German soprano Lydia Teuscher making her UK debut as Gretel. Both reprising their roles from the 2008 Glyndebourne Festival production, German soprano Irmsgard Vilsmaier sings Mother and Austrian tenor Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacker the role of the Witch. British baritone William Dazeley sings Father, having most recently for Glyndebourne sung Eisenstein in the 2006 Glyndebourne Festival production of Die Fledermaus.

The Rake's Progress Stravinsky
Glyndebourne Festival Music Director Vladimir Jurowski continues his exploration of the Russian repertoire conducting this revival of the 1975 production. Originally directed by John Cox and designed by David Hockney, the esteemed pair return to oversee this revival.

Finnish tenor Topi Lehtipuu and Swedish soprano Miah Persson - previously heard together as Ferrando and Fiordiligi in the 2006 Glyndebourne Festival production of Così fan tutte- are reunited for the roles of Tom Rakewell and Anne Trulove. British basses Matthew Rose and Clive Bayley sing the roles of Nick Shadow and Father Trulove respectively. British mezzo-soprano Susan Gorton, who has sung numerous roles at Glyndebourne, sings Mother Goose, with Russian mezzo-soprano Elena Manstina as Baba the Turk and British tenor Graham Clark as Sellem, both making their Glyndebourne debuts.
